Spinal Canal Narrowing

Spinal Canal Narrowing

Patients feel this discomfort with numbness in their legs. Especially when walking, even if the distance is short, it creates the need for rest in the patient. It should not be confused with a lumbar hernia. It occurs as a result of the compression of a single nerve going to the leg in a herniated disc. However, spinal canal narrowing happens as a result of the reduction of a group of nerves that go to the portion, as previously stated. Thus, there are some similarities between a herniated disc and spinal canal narrowing.

Some patients go to the doctor with complaints of a herniated disc. However, a diagnosis of spinal canal narrowing is made by a specialist physician. While there is sudden pain in the legs in the lumbar hernia, numbness and gradual pain occur in the legs when the canal narrows. However, the complaints of spinal canal narrowing do not manifest themselves as clearly as in herniated discs. Instead, it shows some symptoms.

If these symptoms are;

  • Pain in the waist and neck region
  • Loss of strength in the leg after walking a certain distance, pain
  • Numbness and loss of feeling in the legs
  • pain in legs
  • cramps in the legs
  • having trouble standing upright
  • bowel problems
  • Urinary incontinence (in later periods)
  • Decreased sexual power (in later periods)

Usually patients; ‘Before, I didn’t know what it was to rest on the way to the market. But now I rest 4-5 times.’ They express their discomfort with such complaints. Resting for a while reduces the pain and the patient can start walking again. Some patients start walking by leaning forward to reduce the pressure on the nerves. Depending on this situation, patients generally start walking less and start to rise above their ideal weight. Unfortunately, exceeding the ideal weight prolongs the treatment process.
